Periodontic (Gum) Treatment
Home »Periodontal disease, more colloquially known “gum disease” attacks the supporting tissues that surround the tooth, that is – the gum and bone.
Gum disease is common, it can be present without the patient knowing and in severe cases, the tooth or teeth will become mobile and will be lost. Periodontal/gum disease is the major cause of tooth loss in the adult population. As such, gum disease treatment is required.
The early stage of the disease is called gingivitis. As the plaque accumulates around the gum line of the tooth, the bacteria in the plaque begin to attack the gum tissue around the tooth.
Gum disease symptoms include red, sore and inflamed gum tissue, gums that bleeds when brushing and flossing teeth. Gingivitis is easily treated by a skilled scale and clean.
The next stage of periodontal disease is called periodontitis whereby the bacteria penetrates deeper into the gum, attacking the supporting ligament and bone that holds the tooth in the jaw.
At this stage, the patient requires immediate dental gum treatment as they are losing the bone that supports the tooth or teeth, and, if left untreated, the tooth or teeth will become mobile and will have to be extracted.
Gum disease will affect most adults at some time in their lives. The best way to prevent gum inflammation and gum disease is by booking regular six monthly check-ups and thorough oral hygiene which includes brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing daily.
