At Mooloolaba Dental and Swell Dental by Mooloolaba Dental, our local dentists sometimes see patients who have one missing tooth or several missing teeth, or patients who need a tooth extraction performed to remove a cumbersome or painful tooth.
Aside from impacting your self esteem, having missing teeth can cause problems over time so it’s best to rectify the situation as soon as possible. Our local dentists endeavour to make all of our Sunshine Coast dental patients aware of the different ways teeth can be replaced.
There are Various Missing Teeth Dentistry Solutions
There are three common ways we can replace teeth, each with their own advantages:
Upon consultation, your dentist will discuss in detail which of these options may be most ideal, and suitable, in the long-term for you. To get a bit of an idea, we’ll break down the options simplistically below.
A bridge is simply a fake tooth that is attached to the two teeth on either side of it.
This choice involves filing down your existing teeth so that the bridge fits over them and fills in the gap between the teeth. You’ll need to use bridge flossers to keep the area beneath clean and you may have to have the bridge replaced periodically.
This is one of our dental clinic’s most recommended treatments for a missing tooth, but it is also one of the most costly. The treatment involves having a metal rod surgically implanted in your jaw and then having a fake tooth screwed onto it. This solution feels and looks as close to your natural teeth as possible and helps preserve the gums and bone in your jaw.
If your dentist advises you on a partial denture, this involves creating a fake tooth that you wear during the day and remove at night. The partial denture is attached using clips which are sometimes visible. They must also be removed and cleaned every night.
As the name implies, this type of denture is a filler that holds the other teeth in place and keeps you from having a gap in your smile while you have a permanent solution. These aren’t as sturdy as partial dentures but are a good alternative if you need a quick fix.
